Laura Elizabeth Whitehurst, 28, a high school teacher, was arrested Monday night for allegedly having unlawful sex with a 16-year-old minor student.

On June 18th, Whitehurst gave birth to a child authorities believe belongs to the victim.

She allegedly started her relationship with the minor last summer, and after a year, the victim's mother reported it to the school, who then reported the allegations to the police.

Whitehurst was an English teacher and was part of other school activities such as the Compact Club, Link Crew, and assistant coach for the varsity girls soccer team.

Dale Whitehurst, her father, has been a teacher and administrator with the school district for many years. He now teaches English at Beattie Middle School in Highland. He was unable to be reached for comment.

Whitehurst was arrested at her home at 8:45 p.m. Monday and was released later that evening after posting $25,000 bail and is expected in court for an initial hearing date to be determined.

No other victims have been identified, but the police will investigate whether any more victims will come out.

Whitehurst has been placed on leave and is not allowed on school grounds.

If convicted, she faces imprisonment and lifetime sex offender registration according to Penal Code section 290.

As to the child, tests will be done to see whether the father of the victim, who is 17 years old now.
